Debajo de toda la basura que se ve en la fotografía, aunque no lo parezca, existe un río. El río Citarum a su paso por Yakarta, que a día de hoy posee el triste honor de ser el río más contaminado del mundo.

Este río que recorre la isla de Java, en Indonesia, proporciona el 80% de suministro de agua a la capital, Yakarta. Soporta una población de 28 millones de personas y ofrece un 20% del producto interior bruto de Indonesia.

La rápida urbanización e industrialización a lo largo de su cuenca en los últimos 20 años ha abocado en un incremento bestial de aguas residuales sin tratamiento, residuos sólidos y efluentes industriales, que afectan a la salud pública y amenaza gravemente la subsistencia de las familias de pescadores pobres.
